Want a Green Card? The US Now Wants Many Applicants to Leave First

New York : The United States has introduced a major change to its Green Card process, and it could affect thousands of immigrants already living and working there. Under the new approach, many applicants seeking permanent residency may now have to leave the country and apply for an immigrant visa from their home country before returning to the US as permanent residents.

Until now, a large number of people on work, student, or other temporary visas could apply for a Green Card while staying in America through a process known as “adjustment of status.” That option helped applicants continue their jobs and family life in the US while waiting for approval, which often took years.

The new guidance changes that for many cases. US immigration authorities say applicants should generally complete the final stage of the process at an American consulate outside the country. In simple terms, the message is clear: leave first, then come back with an immigrant visa.

The move is expected to impact skilled foreign workers the most, especially Indians working in the technology and healthcare sectors who already face long waiting periods for employment-based Green Cards. Immigration experts believe the change could create uncertainty for families, employees, and companies that depend on foreign talent.

The US government says the decision is aimed at preserving the difference between temporary visas and permanent immigration. Officials also maintain that consular processing has always been part of the legal immigration framework. However, critics argue that forcing applicants to leave the country could lead to delays, financial stress, and complications for people who have already built their lives in America.

While certain exceptions may still be allowed in special circumstances, the announcement signals a tougher immigration stance overall. For many hopeful immigrants, the path to a Green Card may now involve an unexpected step going back home before getting the chance to return permanently.
