“White House Details Trump’s Liberation Day Tariff Plans: 100% on India, 50% on EU”

President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff plan, slated for April 2, 2025, aims to counter high duties on U.S. goods, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Monday. Citing examples like India’s 100% tariff on American agriculture, the EU’s 50% on dairy, Japan’s 700% on rice, and Canada’s nearly 300% on butter and cheese, Leavitt said the reciprocal tariffs will apply to all nations with no exemptions. Trump, speaking on Air Force One, framed the move as a fix for trade imbalances, with specifics to be unveiled by Wednesday.

The policy has sparked global alarm. Trade advisor Peter Navarro, on Fox News, projected auto tariffs could raise $100 billion annually, with broader measures potentially hitting $600 billion yearly. Critics, per NDTV, warn of a trade war, as China, South Korea, and Japan plan to strengthen free trade in response, while India scrambles for a U.S. deal. China tariffs may hinge on a TikTok agreement, though details are unclear, and economists foresee economic turbulence, with Goldman Sachs revising 2025 inflation forecasts upward.

As “Liberation Day” nears, the world braces for impact. IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, cited by Reuters, noted global “anxiety” but tempered fears of a severe downturn. Trump’s aggressive stance, rooted in claims of America being exploited, promises to either level the trade field or ignite international friction Wednesday will tell.
