Trump Imposes 35% Tariff on Canada, Eyes Up to 20% on Other Countries

President Donald Trump announced steep new trade measures targeting Canada on Thursday, imposing a 35% tariff on all Canadian imports effective August 1, 2025. In an official letter posted to Truth Social, Trump framed the move as a response to Canada’s “retaliation” and persistent trade barriers. He simultaneously revealed plans to levy blanket tariffs of 15% to 20% on all other trading partners.

The president accused Canada of failing to curb fentanyl flowing into the U.S. and maintaining unfair trade practices. “Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a Tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States,” Trump declared, emphasizing this was separate from existing sectoral tariffs. He warned that attempts to bypass duties via transshipment would trigger the same 35% penalty.

Trump issued a direct threat to Ottawa, stating any Canadian counter-tariffs would be met with additional U.S. charges: “Whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 35%.” He singled out Canada’s dairy tariffs reaching 400% as contributors to the U.S. trade deficit, which he labeled “a major threat to our Economy and, indeed, our National Security.”
