New York : A US service member was killed and another injured during an operation involving unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday. CENTCOM said the service member was killed in action on July 18 while carrying out a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone in northern Iraq.

Another US service member sustained minor injuries during the operation and continues to receive medical treatment. The command said it is withholding the identities of the fallen and injured personnel out of respect for their families until the formal notification process is completed. Separately, CENTCOM said it has launched a fresh wave of airstrikes against Iran targeting military capabilities allegedly used to carry out attacks on commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest and most strategically important shipping routes.

The command said the operation is part of the United States’ ongoing campaign to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten international maritime security in the region. As the operation unfolded, reports emerged of explosions and heightened military activity across parts of Iran. Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency said several explosions were heard in the southeastern port city of Chabahar.

Separately, Iran’s state-run Press TV reported that US strikes had targeted the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz. There was no immediate confirmation from US officials regarding the reported strike, and Iranian authorities had not released an official assessment of casualties or damage at the time of reporting. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said two oil tankers were blown up after attempting to transit the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz.

The embassy advised all American citizens in Bahrain to remain vigilant, closely follow instructions issued by local authorities and review the latest security guidance. It did not provide further details about the nature or credibility of the potential threat. CENTCOM has not disclosed the specific locations targeted by the latest operation, the scale of the strikes or whether any battle damage assessments have been completed.
