Tarique Rahman To Be Sworn In As Bangladesh’s Prime Minister In Dhaka

Dhaka: Tarique Rahman, chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is scheduled to take the oath of office as Bangladesh’s prime minister on February 17 after his party’s commanding victory in last week’s general election.

The swearing-in will take place at 4 pm local time on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) Complex in Dhaka, a break from tradition, where such ceremonies were usually held at the presidential palace. Earlier in the day, all newly elected Members of Parliament are expected to be sworn in, beginning at 10 am.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to Rahman and his cabinet, signifying the formal transition of executive authority. The BNP’s overwhelming victory in the February 12 polls securing more than two-thirds of the seats in the 297-member Jatiya Sangsad paved the way for Rahman to lead the government after years of political tumult.

The ceremony is expected to draw a large gathering of dignitaries. Confirmed and anticipated attendees include Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla representing India, as well as leaders from the Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. International representation highlights the diplomatic attention Rahman’s appointment is attracting across South Asia.

Rahman’s return marks a significant shift in Dhaka’s political landscape, with the BNP resuming power after decades and launching a new chapter in governance.
