New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Tuesday permitted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital for further treatment. Wangchuk was forcibly removed from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where he had been on an indefinite fast, and admitted to the government-run Safdarjung Hospital. His wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, later approached the High Court seeking his transfer to a private hospital for specialised medical care.
The court also ordered Safdarjung Hospital to share all medical records and treatment details with the private facility to ensure continuity of care. The decision marks a shift from the High Court’s earlier position, when it had upheld the Centre’s decision to continue Wangchuk’s treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. Angmo thanked the Delhi High Court in a post on X and praised Wangchuk’s legal team for securing what she described as a victory achieved “against unbelievable odds in record time.”
However, he urged the Bench to ensure that the activist is not discharged against medical advice. Mehta expressed concern that Wangchuk could return to the protest site if released prematurely, potentially putting his health at serious risk. “He can choose his hospital and his doctors. He should not get discharged against medical advice. What if he goes back to the protest site? What if something happens to him? He cannot take such a risk,” Mehta submitted.
While the doctors said such care could be provided at any suitable hospital, one of the treating physicians, Dr Tandon, recommended that Wangchuk remain under hospital supervision. Taking note of the medical opinion and the family’s preference, the Bench said Wangchuk would be shifted to Medanta Hospital for further treatment under continuous medical care.
