Chennai : DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has sharply criticised states that, he claimed, encourage students to study only Hindi while discouraging English education, linking such policies to poor employment prospects. You are asked not to study English and are told you will be ruined if you do. You will be kept as slaves, he said, remarks that could once again reignite the debate over Hindi imposition.
Maran attributed the movement of people from northern states to the south to these educational practices, arguing that Tamil Nadu’s emphasis on education has driven its economic growth.
All the top global companies are coming to Tamil Nadu because of educated people, he said. He claimed that restricting education to Hindi alone contributes to unemployment in other regions, while Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian model promotes equal access to education for both girls and boys.
The BJP has hit back at DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran’s remarks, saying he lacked common sense and demanding an apology to the country, particularly to Hindi-speaking communities. I don’t think Dayanidhi Maran has any common sense. This is the problem. I strongly condemn his remarks, and he must apologise to the people of India, especially those who speak Hindi, whom he has portrayed as uneducated and uncivilised, BJP leader Thirupathy Narayanan told news agency ANI.
Coming to Maran’s defence, DMK leader TKS Elangovan weighed in on the issue, saying that there is nobody to fight for women in the north. It depends on the party which is ruling the state. Now Congress is empowering women. There is no doubt that wherever Congress is ruling, they are doing good for the education of women. In Tamil Nadu, we fought for women and empowered them.
