Real Sacrifice : ‘Ben’ Donates Kidney To ‘Bhai’, Brother Becomes Dependent On Dialysis Following Kidney Failure

Gandhinagar: An elder sister in Gujarat donated her kidney to save her brother’s life. In Gandhinagar, Gujarat, 60-year-old Kiranbhai Patel had his world upended two years ago when doctors told him his kidneys had failed. Working at a fertiliser company in Bharuch, he was suddenly dependent on dialysis while waiting for a donor.

His son and daughter, both based in Australia, were deeply concerned, and his wife turned to prayer. The crisis left the family struggling to come to terms with what lay ahead. Then came a show of solidarity that few families could match; all four of Kiranbhai’s elder sisters volunteered to donate their kidneys.

The eldest, who flew in from Canada, was ruled out due to age and high blood pressure. The third sister learned during tests that she had been born with just one kidney. The youngest was partially disabled due to a leg condition, which made her ineligible.

Then the second eldest, 58-year-old Sushilaben, was found to be a perfect match. Without hesitation, she agreed to go ahead with the surgery. Bhupendrabhai, stood by us throughout, Kiranbhai told media, adding, he accompanied my sister for all her tests and kept our spirits up. His support played a big role in her decision.

Sushilaben herself was clear about her choice. How can a sister watch her brother in pain? she said. The transplant took place at the Government Kidney Hospital (IKDRC) in Ahmedabad, and one and a half years on, Kiranbhai is leading a healthy, active life. IKDRC has seen around 20 sisters donate kidneys to their brothers and three brothers donate to their sisters.
