New York : US President Donald Trump signalled on Sunday that he is prepared to move to a “second phase” of sanctions against Russia, a step that could also hit countries such as India. The statement came after Russia carried out its largest aerial assault on Ukraine in recent memory, striking a key government complex in Kyiv.
His comments reflect mounting frustration within the administration as the conflict drags on, particularly after his earlier peace efforts failed to secure a ceasefire. Underscoring the shift in approach, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC that Washington and the European Union could impose “secondary tariffs” on nations importing Russian oil.
Washington slapped a 25 per cent penal tariff on Indian exports to the US, raising the overall import duty to 50 per cent. Trump has repeatedly accused New Delhi of “fuelling the Russian war machine” and defended the tariffs as necessary. New Delhi, however, has consistently justified its purchases of Russian crude on grounds of national energy security, calling the US measures unfair. India is a major buyer of Russia’s energy exports, while Western buyers have cut back in response to the war.
The Russia-Ukraine war saw a major escalation on Sunday, with Russia hitting Ukraine’s capital with drones and missiles Sunday in the largest aerial attack since the war began, killing four people across the country and damaging a key government building. Russia attacked with 810 drones and decoys, Ukraine’s air force said, adding it shot down 747 drones and four missiles.
