New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed the Centre was considering shifting Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to another portfolio, even as the government continues to reject demands for his resignation over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The remarks come amid reports that the Centre has firmly backed Pradhan despite sustained protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Government sources reiterated that Pradhan’s resignation is “not on the cards”, arguing that stepping down would be “the easiest decision to take”. They maintained that the Centre stands firmly behind the minister and is instead focused on reforming the National Testing Agency (NTA). Speaking to reporters outside 10 Janpath, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the protesting students had “three non-negotiable demands”, with the removal of the Education Minister being the foremost.
The Congress MP further claimed there had been “some discussion” within Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet about transferring Pradhan to another ministry instead of removing him from the government.”That is not acceptable to the students of India. It is not acceptable to anybody,” Gandhi said, describing Pradhan as “a symbol of corruption” and accusing him of destroying students’ future.
Gandhi also criticised the alleged use of excessive force against protesters during Monday’s march to Parliament, referring to the police lathicharge and the reported use of pellet guns. He demanded strict action against those responsible for “brutalising students” and said they should be held accountable. The Congress leader also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologise to students over the handling of the issue. “Narendra Modi is India’s past. The past can never fight the future,” he said.
