Poingunin : PM Modi on Friday unveiled what organisers describe as the world’s tallest statue of Lord Ram, a 77-feet bronze structure crafted by celebrated sculptor Ram Sutar, at the historic Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt in South Goa. Addressing a gathering in Goa during the unveiling ceremony, said that just days after he unfurled a sacred flag atop Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir, it was a matter of immense happiness for him to have the opportunity to unveil the world’s tallest Lord Ram statue.

PM Modi acknowledged Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt’s 550 years of tradition, saying it was a matter of great pride to know that the institution has braved several cyclones and challenges of times. Modi arrived at the mutt around 3:45 pm, where a special helipad has been constructed on the premises to facilitate his landing. After visiting the temple within the mutt complex, he will address a public gathering.

Goa Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union minister Shripad Naik and the entire state cabinet also attended the ceremony. The 77-feet bronze statue has been created by Ram Sutar, the veteran sculptor behind Gujarat’s Statue of Unity. The unveiling comes amid a series of programmes being held from November 27 to December 7 to commemorate 550 years of the mutt’s tradition.

The mutt premises at Partagal in Canacona were established 370 years ago and continue to serve as a major spiritual centre. Organisers expect between 7,000 and 10,000 visitors daily during the celebrations.
