Kolkata : In perhaps the sharpest attack against the Trinamool Congress over the RG Kar rape-murder case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the victim’s mother worked hard to make her a doctor, but “lost her” to “TMC’s jungle raj”. The mother helped her daughter become a doctor. That daughter was taken away from her by TMC.
The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested and handed a life term amid widespread nationwide outrage over the incident. A postmortem report said she was raped, throttled and smothered to death. In Bengal, the protests snowballed into a wider indictment of the Mamata Banerjee government’s handling of law and order.
The Prime Minister also cited Sandeshkhali, which grabbed attention in 2024 over land grab and sexual assault allegations, saying the BJP had given leadership opportunities to victims there. He accused the TMC, which is eyeing a fourth straight term, of discouraging women from speaking out. When the daughters of Bengal seek justice, the TMC tells them not to step out of their homes to avoid rape. TMC does not want women to dream, PM Modi further said.
The BJP knows very well that women voters have been Mamata’s pillar of strength in past elections. It explains why PM Modi has gone hard against the TMC over women’s safety. Before signing off, PM Modi underlined that the BJP would not allow anyone to trample the dreams of daughters of Bengal.
