A day before Republic Day, the Election Commission Of India was established ON 25 January, 1950.
The 2026 celebrations served as a vital platform to showcase the Election Commission’s latest technological and administrative advancements, with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar detailing initiatives designed to make voting more accessible and secure. A key highlight is the nationwide rollout of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), an effort to ensure voter databases are both accurate and inclusive of all eligible citizens. To further modernize the experience, the ECI launched the “ECINet App,” a comprehensive digital gateway that brings essential services like registration and booth location directly to voters’ smartphones.

Additionally, the Commission has focused on physical convenience by capping the number of electors at 1,200 per polling station, a strategic move aimed at reducing wait times and creating a more streamlined, efficient environment for every citizen to exercise their democratic right.
Since its inception in 2011, National Voters’ Day has been observed annually on January 25 to commemorate the day the ECI was founded in 1950. The primary objective remains the same which is to maximize the enrollment of new voters and encourage the youth to take an active role in the political process.
