Mumbai: Stand up comedian Madhur Virli has issued a public apology after an old clip from his 2024 show resurfaced online, sparking widesperad criticism over remarks involving rape in a joke that many called deeply insensitive.
The controversy erupted after a video from virils stand up special love and latex began circulating on social media this week. In the clip, he makes a dark joke refrencing sexual voilence, which quickly triggered outrage online, with users accusing him of trivialising a serious crime and crossing ethical boundaries in comedy.
As backlash intensified , Virli responded through a statement shared on his YouTube channel, apologising for the content and acknowledging that the material was inappropriate. He said the clip was from a performance done around two years ago and claimed he had removed the segment shortly after the show once he reflected on it.

The resurfaced video has reignited debate over the limits of stand up comedy in India, especially regarding jokes on sexual violence. Several users on social media demanded stricter accountability, while others argued the backlash reflects a growing tension between free expression and responsible humour.
Virli’s case has also come amid a broader wave of online scrutiny targeting stand up comedians in recent weeks, further intensifying discussions about content boundaries in the country’s comedy circuit.
As of now, the clip continues to circulate widely online, while the comedian’s apology statement has drawn mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike.
