New Delhi: The Indian government has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), while Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been selected as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, according to official announcements reported by PTI, ANI and several media organisations.
Lt Gen Raja Subramani, a retired senior Army officer decorated with the PVSM, AVSM, SM and VSM honours, will succeed General Anil Chauhan following his retirement later this month. The appointment marks a significant transition in India’s top military leadership structure.
Reports by PTI stated that Raja Subramani has held several important operational and command roles during his military career. He previously served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff and commanded key formations, including the Army’s Central Command and 2 Corps. He also has extensive experience in counter-insurgency and operational deployments in sensitive regions such as Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Navy chief. According to ANI and other reports, the senior naval officer currently serves in a leadership role within the Indian Navy and has commanded several frontline formations during his career. He has also held appointments linked to personnel management and operational command within naval headquarters.
The appointments come as India continues efforts to strengthen coordination among the three armed services under the integrated defence structure introduced through the CDS system.
Media reports noted that both officers are expected to assume their new responsibilities later this month. Defence analysts view the appointments as part of the government’s broader focus on continuity and operational preparedness within the armed forces.
