Khalistani extremists tearing the Indian national flag in front of S. Jaishankar’s vehicle in London

NEW DELHI: During his official UK visit from March 4-9, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar encountered aggressive protests in London. As he was leaving an event at the Chatham House think tank on Thursday (IST), demonstrators affiliated with the Khalistan movement heckled him and attempted to physically confront him.

A circulating video captured a man running toward Jaishankar’s vehicle and vandalizing the Indian national flag in view of London police officers, who appeared to take no immediate action. Outside the venue, other pro-Khalistan supporters held the flag and staged a protest, adding to the charged atmosphere.

The incident unfolded amid Jaishankar’s broader diplomatic tour aimed at reinforcing the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership. During this visit, the minister is set to engage in talks with key British officials, including his counterpart David Lammy, focusing on areas such as trade, health, education, people-to-people ties, and defence cooperation.

Following his engagements in the United Kingdom, Jaishankar will travel to Ireland from March 6-7. There, he is scheduled to meet Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris, interact with other senior officials, and engage with the Indian diaspora.

This episode highlights the volatile political climate surrounding the Khalistan issue, even as India pursues its broader diplomatic and strategic objectives. Despite the unrest, the minister’s tour continues, reflecting India’s resolve to strengthen international relations and address contentious issues through dialogue and engagement.

In summary, the incident in London serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extremist factions, even as diplomatic efforts to enhance bilateral ties move forward.
