Kejriwal Questions Meta After Claiming Instagram Account Was Restricted In India

New Delhi : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday claimed that his Instagram account had been restricted in India and alleged that Meta had failed to explain the move despite repeated attempts to seek clarification. The former Delhi Chief Minister questioned the Mark Zuckerberg-led company over the alleged restriction and took a swipe at it, urging Meta not to “bow down” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At the time of publishing this report, both Kejriwal’s Instagram and Facebook accounts remained accessible to users in India. Why have you restricted my account? Verbal enquiries at your India office revealed that my account has been restricted in India and is unavailable in India. Why?” Kejriwal wrote on X. He further alleged that Meta’s India office had not provided any reason for the restriction or informed him how the issue could be resolved.

Emails sent to the company received only routine acknowledgements without any substantive response, prompting him to describe Meta’s customer support as pretty bad service. Continuing his attack, Kejriwal also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, Don’t bow down to our Prime Minister so much. Else he will allow you to run only his own account in India. Kejriwal’s remarks came a day after Meta apologised for briefly restricting a Facebook video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, attributed the incident to an error, saying, “I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi’s post.”

The apology followed a demand by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology, which asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to apologise over the temporary removal of the Prime Minister’s speech from the platform. The latest controversy also comes amid heightened scrutiny of social media platforms following a Bombay High Court order directing Meta, X and Google to immediately remove posts found to be “vile, abusive, obscene and defamatory” against Union Minister Nitin Gadkari over the E20 petrol rollout.
