Is Disaster Near? Doomsday Fish Surfaces in Mexico

The recent appearance of the rare oarfish near Baja California Sur, Mexico has taken over the discussion on social media. Oar fish is also called as Doomsday Fish, this creature’s sighting is considered as a signal of an upcoming natural disaster?
What is oarfish ?
Oarfish are among the most fascinating and mysterious deep-sea creatures. Oarfish are quite harmless , they have small mouths and no teeth and they feed by filtering small prey from the water. The structure of an oarfish is a ribbon-shaped fish, very thin from side to side, the oarfish may grow to a length of about 9 metres and the weight can be upto 300kgs. The oarfish is reported to be the longest of all the fishes. The giant oarfish is a species of the family Regalecidae.
Is Oarfish a threat ?
The oarfish is also known as the doomsday fish. The appearance of the rare oarfish near the surface have long been associated with the forthcoming natural disasters, specifically earthquakes and tsunamis, the myth of oarfish has been considered from the 17th century in Japan. The myth confirmed to be true in the year 2011 when several oarfish washed up on beaches in Japan only some months before the destructive Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. This made the belief of the doomsday oarfish even stronger.
The user named FearBuck has posted the video of the oarfish which washed ashore in Mexico.He further wrote ” Legend has it that this mysterious “doomsday fish” only emerges from the ocean’s depths when disaster is near’. Yet, there is no as such information of it being an omen but a belief.
