A 33-year-old Indian IT professional lost his life when his vehicle was overwhelmed by powerful flash floodwaters in Kansas, United States.
Venkatesh Doppalapudi, who held an H-1B visa and lived in Omaha, Nebraska, was driving back from Houston on Saturday afternoon. Severe storms had unleashed more than six inches of rain across south-central Kansas, triggering sudden and dangerous flooding.
Emergency responders from the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area near the 600 block of South Oliver Road, close to Wellington, Kansas, after witnesses reported a car submerged near a bridge with a person trapped inside. Strong currents initially made it impossible for rescue teams to safely approach the vehicle.
Despite the challenges, authorities conducted a thorough multi-agency operation involving ground teams, the Kansas Highway Patrol Air Unit, and police drones. Doppalapudi’s body was recovered on Sunday.
The Indian Consulate General in Houston expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Officials stated they are in contact with the family and working closely with relevant authorities to offer every possible support during this difficult period. The consulate extended heartfelt condolences to Doppalapudi’s relatives and friends, noting his origins in Andhra Pradesh.
The flooding event stranded multiple vehicles and individuals across the region. Local emergency management reported a high volume of distress calls, with several cars abandoned and requiring towing. Authorities urged residents to avoid flooded areas and respect barricades, highlighting the ongoing hazards posed by rising waters and debris, such as downed power lines.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable and often lethal nature of flash floods, which can develop rapidly even in areas not typically associated with such extreme weather. Doppalapudi’s passing has left his family and the broader Indian community in the United States grieving a promising young professional whose life was cut short by natural forces beyond his control.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, the focus remains on supporting those affected and reinforcing safety messages about driving in adverse weather conditions.
