New Delhi : India on Saturday welcomed the Alaska Summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling their leadership “highly commendable” in the pursuit of peace. New Delhi also underscored the importance of diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict. “India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy.
In what is being seen as a relief for India, US President Donald Trump said he was not immediately considering secondary sanctions on Russia and its trade partners. However, Trump asserted that he might have to reconsider it in “2-3 weeks”. “I may have to think about it (sanctions) in two or three weeks or something, but we don’t have to think about that immediately,” the US President, who had just days ago adopted an aggressive tone against Russia, said.
The high-profile Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded Friday without an agreement to end or pause the war in Ukraine, the deadliest conflict in Europe since 1945, now in its fourth year. Trump said on Friday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin made “very productive” progress but reached no final agreement after a nearly three-hour summit in Anchorage, Alaska, focused on the war in Ukraine.
“There were many, many points that we agreed on,” Trump said at a joint press conference with Putin. “I would say a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we’ve made some headway. So there’s no deal until there’s a deal.” “And there are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn’t get there.” he added.
