Benjamin Netanyahu’s staff responded quickly to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s announcement that he is still in negotiations to arrest the Israeli prime minister when he travels to New York for the next UN session.Prime Minister Netanyahu should be at The Hague, in my opinion. The International Criminal Court has charged him as a war criminal. In an interview that was published on Saturday, Mamdani told The New York Times, “That is an opinion that is held by many, purely because of what his actions have wrought over these many years.”
During his mayoral race, Mamdani had previously promised to arrest Netanyahu. He stated that he is discussing the matter with the city’s legal counsel since he is unsure of his authority to order the arrest of a foreign leader.
“Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that’s what we will do,” Mamdani stated.
Israel responded sharply to Mamdani’s remarks. Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, wrote on X, “Instead of focusing on his responsibilities as mayor and confronting the rising wave of antisemitism in his city, he has chosen to incite hostility and generate headlines by attacking the State of Israel.”
Nothing will change. Israeli Prime Minister @netanyahu will travel to New York, proudly address the UN General Assembly, and stand in front of the world to declare Israel’s truth and its steadfast right to defend its citizens. And @NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani should be arrested,” Danon continued.
Netanyahu remarked, “I think, secretly, he hates America,” and accused Mamdani of aiding Hamas on a recent radio program in New York.
