Panic Near Bengal Border as Hundreds Try Returning to Bangladesh After Adhikari’s ‘Quit India’ Remark

West Bengal : Tension has risen along parts of the India Bangladesh border in West Bengal after senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari made strong remarks against illegal immigrants, triggering fear among many suspected undocumented Bangladeshi nationals living in the state. Reports suggest that hundreds of people gathered near border areas in North 24 Parganas in recent days, hoping to cross back into Bangladesh amid growing concerns over possible detention and deportation drives.

The situation intensified after Adhikari called for strict action against illegal infiltration and publicly stated that those staying in India illegally should “quit India.” His comments quickly sparked political debate across the state and drew mixed reactions from different communities.

According to local sources, security agencies have increased vigilance in sensitive border regions, while state authorities are discussing stronger verification measures and tighter monitoring of undocumented residents. The issue has once again brought illegal immigration and border security into sharp focus in West Bengal, a state that has long dealt with cross border migration concerns because of its proximity to Bangladesh

Opposition leaders, however, accused the BJP of creating fear ahead of elections and alleged that such statements could increase social tension. Supporters of Adhikari defended the move, saying stricter action is necessary to protect national security and maintain proper citizenship records.

Meanwhile, several videos related to the incident have gone viral on social media, though fact checkers warned that not all of them are authentic. Some clips being circulated online were later found to be unrelated to the current situation, adding confusion to an already sensitive issue.

As political reactions continue to grow, the developments have once again turned immigration and border control into a major talking point in Bengal politics.
