Harbhajan Singh Security Withdrawn By Punjab Police After BJP Switch

Jalandhar: The Punjab Police has reportedly withdrawn the security cover provided to Rajya Sabha MP and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh following his recent political switch, according to a report by LiveMint. The development comes amid broader changes in political alignments in the state.

As per LiveMint, Harbhajan Singh was among a group of lawmakers who recently moved from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sources cited in the report indicated that the security arrangement, which included around nine to ten Punjab Police personnel, was withdrawn on Saturday.

The police cover had been deployed at Singh’s residence located in the Chhotti Baradari area of Jalandhar. While the state-provided security has been removed, LiveMint reported that personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were seen stationed outside his residence on Sunday, suggesting that alternative arrangements may have been put in place.

The decision to withdraw the security detail has drawn attention as it follows closely on the heels of his political transition. However, officials have not publicly detailed the reasons behind the move, and there has been no official statement clarifying whether the withdrawal is directly linked to the shift in political affiliation.

The development is part of a wider pattern of security reviews involving public figures in Punjab, where state-provided protection is periodically reassessed. LiveMint noted that such decisions are typically based on threat perception and administrative considerations.

Meanwhile, the presence of central security personnel indicates that Singh continues to have some level of protection, even as the state police withdraw their deployment.

The situation remains under observation, with no further updates on whether the Punjab Police may revisit the decision or alter the current security arrangements in the coming days.
