New Delhi : PM Modi on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s role in the emerging Gaza peace framework, after Hamas signalled readiness to release hostages and accept parts of Trump’s plan. We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward, PM Modi said in a statement on X.
The Prime Minister added that India would continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace, underlining the importance of stability and reconciliation in the Middle East. The development comes at a time when US-India relations have been under strain due to significant trade tensions. In August this year, President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, citing trade imbalances and India’s continued purchase of Russian oil amid the ongoing war with Ukraine.
In September 2025, President Trump made a late-night phone call to Prime Minister Modi to wish him a happy 75th birthday. Modi publicly acknowledged the call, expressing gratitude and emphasising his commitment to strengthening the India-US partnership. Additionally, in early October 2025, President Trump reposted a message from Prime Minister Modi on Truth Social, where Modi endorsed Trump’s Gaza peace plan as a viable pathway to long-term peace. This act of reposting, though without additional commentary from Trump, was seen as a positive diplomatic signal.
Countries were cautious to react after Hamas on Friday announced it was ready to release Israeli hostages and accept parts of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, framing the move as both significant and uncertain. Canada lauded the commitments, welcoming Hamas’ pledge to relinquish direct power and release all hostages, whether alive or deceased.
It called on all parties to swiftly transform promises into action, intensified coordination with allies for lasting stability, and reaffirmed its backing for a sovereign, democratic Palestinian state coexisting with Israel. The United Nations echoed calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the unconditional release of captives, and unfettered humanitarian access.
