Ahmedabad : Counting of votes for Gujarat’s local self-government elections has started, with results being declared across multiple civic bodies in the state. Elections were held for 15 municipal corporations. It is to be noted that 15 municipal corporations witnessed a turnout of 49%. A total of 732 candidates were elected unopposed ahead of the polls. This includes 43 candidates in municipal corporations.
The BJP is leading with 315 seats across 15 municipal corporations, while the INC has 17 seats and other parties have managed to gain 5 seats so far. BJP is in the lead with 248 seats, while the INC has 32 seats and other parties have 5 seats in municipal corporations. In Navsari Municipal Corporation, the BJP has made a strong showing, winning 14 out of 50 seats so far, while the opposition is yet to open its account. At 10 am, in 15 municipal corporations, the BJP has managed to gain 155 seats so far.
A dispute broke out at the counting centre of Gujarat College in Ahmedabad. BJP workers created a commotion after Congress workers arrived wearing party scarves. They also accused the police of bias. In the 15 municipal corporations where elections were contested for 1,044 seats, the BJP has secured 43 seats so far. In Ahmedabad, the BJP has gained 2 out of 192 seats, while in Vadodara they have gained 2, in Anand 12, and in Porbandar 11.
Gujarat has a total of 15 municipal corporations. Ahmedabad, Surat,Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Navsari, Vapi, Karamsad–Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Surendranagar, Morbi, Porbandar, Gandhidham. It is to noted that elections are not being held in Gandhinagar and Junagadh as the current municipal corporation terms are still ongoing.
