Karachi : A day after tensions flared outside Pakistan’s Adiala jail amid rumours that Imran Khan had died in custody, the prison administration said the former Prime Minister was in good health and remained inside the facility. There is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala jail. He is fully healthy,” the statement said. The former Pakistani skipper and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief has been languishing in jail for over two years now in a web of corruption and terrorism cases.
Imran’s sisters, Noreen Khan (Niazi), Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, who have been at the forefront of the protests, have claimed that they have not been allowed to meet him despite court orders. The Islamabad High Court has permitted Imran’s family visitation rights twice a week. Chaos erupted on Wednesday after PTI workers and Imran’s sisters staged a sit-in demonstration near the Adiala Jail checkpost. Soon, thousands of PTI workers descended on the site and protested violently.
However, the protest was called off after the jail officials and police assured Aleema Khan that a meeting with Imran Khan would be arranged, ARY News reported. The sisters will likely be allowed to meet Imran Khan later today and again next Tuesday. The protest follows a sit-in by Imran’s sisters last week. They had claimed that they were dragged on the street, manhandled, and briefly detained.
Pakistan’s defence minister, Khawaja Asif, claimed that Imran was receiving far more comfort in prison compared to what he had faced while being behind bars in the past. Check the menu of the food that comes for him. It is not available even in a five-star hotel,” Asif said, according to Geo News. He also asserted that the former PM had access to a television, exercise equipment and other facilities. Asif said Imran had been provided a double bed and a “velvet mattress” as well.
