Dhaka : Thousands Of Hindu Flood Streets, Raise ‘Jai Shree Ram’ Chants Over Alleged Desecration Row

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s capital witnessed scenes of high tension and mass mobilisation as thousands of members of the Hindu community gathered in central Dhaka, raising chants of “Jai Shree Ran” and demanding swift action against those allegedly involved in the desecration of a Lord Ram image and opposition to a Proposed Ram statue project.

The protest, centred around the Shahbagh area, drew students, religious activists and members of minority rights groups, turning one of Dhaka’s busiest intersections into a sea of demonstrators. Protesters accused authorities of failing to adequately address concerns surrounding the alleged insult to Hindu religious sentiments and called for stronger protectionof minority rights.

The agitation follows reports from northern bangladesh that a photograph or representation of Lord Ram was allegedly desecrated, triggering outrage among Hinduu organisations accross the country. Several student led groups had earlier staged torchlight procession and issued an ultimatum demanding action against those responsible. With no visible resolution, organisers escalated the movement with a larger demonstration in the capital.

Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media showed protestors carrying saffron flags, banners and placards while repeatedly chanting ” Jai Shree Ram.” Demonstrators also voiced concerns over what they described as growing insecurity among religious minorities and demanded stricter action against extremist elements.

Another major issue fuelling the protest is the controversy surrounding a proposed 81-foot statue of Lord Ram in Gaibandha district. Hindu organisations claim the project faced strong opposition from radical groups and that construction efforts were effectively halted. Protest leaders argued that the dispute reflects broader challenges faced by Bangladesh’s Hindu community in practising and expressing their faith freely.

The latest mobilisation comes against the backdrop of continuing debates over minority rights in Bangladesh. Hindu groups have repeatedly raised concerns over attacks on temples, religious symbols and community members in recent years. Various organisations have sought stronger legal safesuards and prosecution of crime targeting minorities.

Bangladesh’s Hindu population constitutes roughly eight per cent of the country’s 170 million people. Minority advocacy groups have long urged successive governments to enact dedicated protections and ensure accountability in cases involving communal violence.

As the demonstrations gathered momentum, security forces remained deployed in key parts of Dhaka to prevent any escalation. Authorities had not announced any major policy response at the time of writing, but protest organisers indicated that further demonstrations could follow if their demands remain unmet.

For now, the chants echoing across Dhaka’s streets have underscored a growing sense of frustration among sections of Bangladesh’s Hindu community, turning a local controversy into a national flashpoint.
