Massive Avalanche Engulfs Kashmir’s Sonamarg, CCTV Footage Out | Video

Sonamarg : A powerful avalanche barreled down on the Sonamarg tourist resort in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ganderbal district late Tuesday night, transforming the snow-clad destination into a sweeping wall of white within moments – a dramatic event captured on CCTV, officials and footage show. Authorities say the slide occurred around 10:12 pm, and although the snow surged over streets and buildings, no casualties have been reported, according to news agency PTI.

The chilling video shared by PTI depicts a tranquil valley instantly overtaken by a massive cloud of snow, underscoring the suddenness and intensity of the avalanche as it raced downhill. Officials attributed the incident to persistent snowfall in the region, which has heightened avalanche risks and prompted warnings for several districts.

The severe winter conditions have disrupted daily life across the Kashmir Valley, forcing the cancellation of all flights at Srinagar airport and the closure of major roadways including the Srinagar–Jammu national highway, which was shut due to heavy snow accumulation on key stretches. Local authorities have advised travellers to verify air and road connectivity before setting out.

The incident occurred a day after authorities warned of a high-intensity or high-danger avalanche in the district, according to officials. Over the past 24 hours, Sonamarg and a number of other locations in the Kashmir Valley have had moderate to heavy snowfall, raising the possibility of avalanches.

In view of the prevailing weather advisory, dedicated helplines have also been set up by District Emergency Operation Centre(DEOC).

Eleven districts, including Ganderbal, Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramula, Kulgam, and Kupwara in Kashmir and Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, and Ramban in the Jammu region, have received avalanche warnings from the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA). According to PTI, the warnings remained in effect until Tuesday night.
