New Delhi : Families of Delhi Police personnel injured during the recent student protests in the capital on Friday said police officers faced sustained violence during the agitation, but their injuries and suffering received little public attention. At a press conference in New Delhi, the families screened videos purportedly showing attacks on police personnel and alleged that anti-social elements had infiltrated the student-led protest.
The families also objected to what they described as a one-sided public narrative focused on allegations of police excesses against students. They urged people not to vilify police personnel for actions taken during the agitation led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The daughter of a Delhi Police sub-inspector who was injured during the protest said her father was “almost lynched” during an attack, leaving him unconscious and causing deep distress to the family.
Recalling the alleged attack on July 25, she said her father was dragged by a mob near the stage at Jantar Mantar at around 2 pm and remained unconscious at RML Hospital for nearly four hours. “Seeing him like that was extremely painful for us. That night was one of the most difficult nights our family has ever faced,” she said. She also questioned the attention given to attacks on police personnel, saying that social media posts had portrayed her father as a criminal while those who allegedly attacked him had approached the Supreme Court.
The officer, she said, had previously served as a Marine Commando before joining the Delhi Police and had never spoken against students, even after the alleged attack. “Even after almost being lynched, he has never said anything against students. He was simply injured while performing his duty,” she said. Seema, the wife of another Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector, said her husband, who joined the force as a constable and has completed 33 years of service, was injured during the CJP’s march towards Parliament on July 20.
According to Seema, her husband told her that the crowd had grown aggressive and that anti-social elements had joined the protest. She said he was later admitted to hospital after allegedly being struck by stones. She alleged that protesters used flower pots, slippers, shoes, stones and other objects to attack police personnel. The officer also told her that protesters had broken through barricades erected to secure Parliament and attacked policemen who were trying to stop them.
