New Delhi : The Union Cabinet on Friday approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, paving the way for stricter action against examination paper leaks. The decision came shortly after Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh concluded a meeting with Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) representatives Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das.
The meeting between the CJP delegation and the Centre, held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, focused on the ongoing student agitation and the outfit’s demands over the alleged NEET paper leak. Visuals from the meeting showed the two sides holding discussions as the government continued its outreach efforts.
The Cabinet approval followed meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), after which the full Union Cabinet convened to clear the proposed amendments.
Amid heightened security in the national capital, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that the New Delhi Metro station would remain closed until further notice. The corporation said interchange facilities at the station had also been suspended. Earlier, the DMRC had ordered the closure of 17 Metro stations in view of the prevailing security situation.
Despite the Centre’s engagement with protest leaders, CJP founding president Abhijeet Dipke reiterated that the agitation would continue until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. He said neither the government’s outreach nor activist Sonam Wangchuk’s decision to end his 26-day hunger strike would alter the movement’s central demand.
Dipke maintained that the protest represented students and youth across the country and was not centred around any individual or political party. He also alleged that Wangchuk had effectively been kept under detention, claiming that while Union Minister JP Nadda was allowed to meet him, Opposition leaders and CJP representatives were denied access.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police cancelled the leave of all personnel until further orders, citing the prevailing law and order situation. According to an official directive, only emergency leave will be granted as security arrangements remain in place amid the ongoing CJP protest at Jantar Mantar.
