Meta Introduces Private AI Conversations on WhatsApp

Meta has announced a new feature called Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, aimed at giving users a more private way to interact with artificial intelligence tools. The company said the feature is powered by its Private Processing technology and is designed to ensure that even Meta cannot access the content of users’ AI conversations.

The launch comes at a time when more people are turning to AI chatbots for sensitive and personal discussions, including topics related to health, finances, careers, and relationships. Meta stated that the new feature is intended to create a safer and more confidential environment for users seeking AI assistance.

According to the company, Incognito Chat works by creating a temporary and isolated chat session that is only accessible to the user. Messages exchanged during the session are processed in a secure environment and are not stored automatically. Once the conversation ends, the chat disappears, leaving behind no accessible history.

Meta said the system differs from some existing private AI chat modes offered by other platforms because the company itself cannot read either the user’s questions or the AI-generated replies. The feature relies on WhatsApp’s Private Processing infrastructure, which Meta had previously introduced for AI-related functions.

Users will be able to start an Incognito Chat directly within WhatsApp or through the Meta AI application. Meta explained that these sessions remain separate from regular AI interactions and are specifically designed to avoid retaining chat records.

In addition to the new feature, Meta also announced plans to expand Private Processing support across WhatsApp in the coming months. The company revealed that it is developing another feature called Side Chat with Meta AI, which will allow users to receive AI assistance during an ongoing WhatsApp conversation without disrupting the main chat thread.

Meta said the Side Chat feature will operate under the same private infrastructure used for Incognito Chat, ensuring secure and protected processing of conversations.

The rollout of Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app will take place gradually over the next few months. Meta has also released a technical whitepaper detailing the security framework and architecture behind its Private Processing system.
