The latest updates build on Meta’s Teen Accounts programme, which automatically places teenagers into accounts with stricter privacy and safety settings. These protections are aimed at limiting unwanted interactions, restricting exposure to inappropriate content, and providing parents with greater oversight.
Parents to Receive Alerts in Sensitive Situations
One of the key additions is a new alert system that will notify parents if a supervised teen repeatedly searches for terms linked to suicide or self-harm within a short period. Meta said the feature is intended to help parents identify potential warning signs and initiate supportive conversations when needed.
The notifications will be delivered through multiple channels, including email, text messages, WhatsApp, and in-app alerts. Parents will also receive access to expert-backed resources designed to assist them in handling sensitive discussions with their children.

For users under the age of 16, parental approval is required to modify several default safety settings.
The company has also been using artificial intelligence to identify users who may be underage and automatically place them into age-appropriate settings, even if incorrect birth dates are provided during registration.
