Washington: In a development that highlights both the promise and challenges of artificial intelligence, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently described an unusual case where a non-scientist used ChatGPT to help create a personalized cancer vaccine for his pet dog. The account, reported by India Today, was shared during Altman’s appearance on the Mostly Human podcast.
Altman recounted meeting a man who travelled from Australia after successfully designing an mRNA-based vaccine tailored to his dog’s cancer. What makes the case remarkable is that the individual had no formal background in medicine or scientific research. Despite this, he used ChatGPT to understand the disease, identify relevant genetic information, and outline how such a vaccine could be developed.
According to Altman, the individual went beyond theoretical work. He collaborated with academic researchers and specialists who helped carry out the laboratory processes required to produce the treatment. Altman noted that the effort demonstrated how AI tools can empower individuals to perform tasks that would typically require the resources of a full research institution.
The outcome, as described in the report, was positive, with the dog’s life reportedly being saved. The individual is now exploring ways to apply similar methods to assist other animals facing serious illnesses.
However, the story also raised concerns about the broader implications of such technology. During the discussion, it was pointed out that the same tools enabling medical innovation could potentially be misused to create harmful biological agents. Altman acknowledged these risks, emphasising that safety remains a key priority for AI developers.
He stressed the importance of building “AI resilience,” where systems are equipped not only to prevent misuse but also to respond effectively to emerging threats, including faster disease detection and treatment development.
