AWS Down: Amazon Web Services Outage Disrupts Major Global Services, Thousands of Users Affected

Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s largest cloud service providers, faced a major global outage on Monday, impacting thousands of users across multiple regions. According to Downdetector, over 15,000 users reported issues as the disruption spread across several AWS-powered applications and websites.

AWS confirmed the incident, stating on its official status page that it had detected “increased error rates and latencies” in multiple services within its US-EAST-1 region. The outage began around 8 AM UK time (12:30 PM IST), with Downdetector tracking a sharp spike in user complaints. Platforms relying heavily on Amazon’s cloud network including Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Ring experienced widespread performance issues.

Amazon Confirms Service Outage
Amazon’s status update acknowledged the ongoing service problems, noting that users might face difficulty creating support cases through both the Support Center and API. “We are actively working to mitigate the problem and identify the root cause,” the company said, adding that further updates would be shared within 45 minutes.

Investigation Points to DNS Issue
A subsequent update on AWS’s status page identified a potential cause linked to the DNS resolution process for DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 zone. The company explained that this problem was also affecting other AWS services and global features that rely on the same endpoints, such as IAM updates and DynamoDB Global Tables.

AWS reported that mitigation steps had already been implemented and early signs of recovery were visible for several services. However, users might still encounter failed requests or slower operations as systems clear backlogs. Amazon assured users that recovery efforts were ongoing and promised continuous updates.

According to AWS’s own service status page, 37 of its core offerings were affected by the disruption. These include major tools and platforms such as:

  • Amazon EC2

  • AWS Config
  • Amazon API Gateway

  • AWS Security Token Service
