Travis Head Glances at Axar Patel After Predicting ‘Rohit, Kohli Will Play Till 2027 World Cup’; All-Rounder Responds With a Smile

As anticipation builds for the upcoming India–Australia ODI series, all eyes are on the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket. The opening match at Perth’s Optus Stadium has sparked plenty of discussion, particularly around whether the legendary duo will continue playing until the 2027 World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Both Ko hli and Rohit retired from Test cricket earlier this year and with ODI captaincy now resting with Shubman Gill, speculation about their white-ball futures is growing.

In a pre-series press interaction two days before the first ODI, Australia’s Travis Head and India’s Axar Patel spoke to the media. Head praised Kohli and Rohit, jokingly glancing at Axar as he suggested the pair could aim for the 2027 World Cup. “They’ve been incredible for India. I can’t speak as highly about them as Axar would, but they’re two of the finest white-ball players Virat perhaps the best ever, and Rohit not far behind. Rohit’s achievements as an opener are outstanding. I suppose they’ll be missed someday, but I think they’ll keep going until 2027,” Head said, looking sheepishly at Axar, who responded with a smile.

RoKo “Ready to Go,” Says Axar
Axar Patel, set to play a key all-rounder role in Ravindra Jadeja’s absence, said both senior players remain thoroughly professional and eager for the series. “They know what’s needed, they’re ready. They’ve prepared well; everyone’s passed their fitness tests. They’re raring to go,” Axar noted.

He added that Shubman Gill is likely to benefit from having Kohli and Rohit in the side, especially as the new ODI captain.

The Indian squad arrived in Australia on Thursday morning and has already held two practice sessions at Optus Stadium. This stretch could mark Rohit and Virat’s final tour in Australia, adding yet another layer of intrigue to the series.
