Rain Threatens to Delay India–Australia ODI in Perth on Sunday

The match is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM IST, but rain may disrupt play. Interestingly, the new Perth Stadium has not been a lucky venue for the Australian team.

Perth: The opening One-Day International (ODI) between India and Australia — set for Sunday, October 19 — may not start on time due to the possibility of rain before the match. Weather forecasts suggest that showers could also interrupt play later in the day.

The game is scheduled to start at 11:30 AM local time (9:00 AM IST). Meteorologists have predicted a 70% chance of rain on Sunday morning in Perth, with the likelihood possibly increasing. As a result, both teams and spectators might face a challenging day.

Toss Likely to Play a Crucial Role

The toss could be decisive. Generally, the team winning the toss is expected to bowl first, assess the target, and plan the chase accordingly. Given the pitch conditions favoring pace bowlers, captains may prefer to bowl first to try and dismiss the opposition cheaply. Cloudy weather could further influence the match outcome, with seam and swing bowlers likely to benefit.

Perth’s pitch traditionally offers good bounce, providing additional assistance to fast bowlers. Middle-order batters, in particular, will face a tough test in these conditions.

India’s First ODI at Perth Stadium

While Perth has long been a famous cricket venue in Australia, matches were historically played at the WACA Ground, known for its green, lively pitch. However, since 2018, all international matches have been held at the new Perth Stadium, and Sunday’s match will mark India’s first-ever ODI at this venue.

India has played two Tests here previously winning one and losing one but never an ODI. Interestingly, Australia has played three ODIs at Perth Stadium (against Pakistan, South Africa, and England) and has lost all three.

Pitch Report

Of the three ODIs played at Perth Stadium so far, two were won by teams batting second. The pitch is considered a paradise for fast bowlers, offering both extra bounce and good pace, which can trouble batters early on.
To succeed here, batters must be patient, play late, and choose their shots carefully to avoid early dismissals.
