MS Dhoni ‘there is a line’ between him and Virat Kohli, Declines to Share Text Message: ‘He was never happy…’

For over ten years, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli played together on the Indian cricket team, forging a friendship that Dhoni describes as having a distinct boundary. In a recent interview, the former captain shed light on the intricacies of his relationship with Kohli, who succeeded him as India’s skipper.

Kohli entered international cricket in 2008, stepping into a team led by Dhoni, already a towering figure after securing the T20 World Cup and the CB Series in Australia. Widely regarded as one of India’s top captains, Dhoni guided Kohli’s development, helping him evolve into a batting powerhouse. Their mutual respect endured through Dhoni’s last international appearance in 2019, captained by Kohli.

Their bond has shone publicly too. In 2022, Kohli posted a throwback photo on X from the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinal alongside Dhoni, captioned “always my captain.” Last IPL season, their warm embrace before the Chennai Super Kings versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru opener delighted fans.

Dhoni highlighted Kohli’s insatiable hunger for runs, recalling how he was never content with a 40 or 60—he chased centuries and aimed to bat through. This drive, paired with his dedication to fitness, kept him at the top of his game. Kohli often sought Dhoni’s input, probing for ways to refine his approach.

Their exchanges shaped their relationship. Dhoni offered straightforward advice—tweak this, hold off an over, or take a calculated gamble—laying the groundwork for a connection that grew from mentor-protégé to friends. Yet, Dhoni insists a “line” persists, a nod to their senior-junior dynamic. Now, free of captaincy duties, they savor lighter moments, like pre-toss chats.

Kohli’s exit from captaincy remains a tender topic. After relinquishing the T20I role post the 2021 T20 World Cup, he was ousted as ODI captain, clashing with then-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. His subsequent resignation from Test leadership, though framed as his choice, likely stemmed partly from that turmoil.

Amid this, Kohli noted only one person contacted him: Dhoni. For a man not glued to his phone, Dhoni’s text carried weight for Kohli. Pressed on its contents, Dhoni stayed mum, valuing discretion. He stressed that privacy builds trust, encouraging cricketers—especially those he hasn’t played with—to confide in him without worry of leaks.
