Asia Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reportedly handed over the Asia Cup 2025 trophy to the UAE Cricket Board after controversy erupted over his handling of the silverware. The move follows strong objections raised by India during the ACC’s virtual meeting on September 30, two days after India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the Asia Cup final.
During the meeting, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) representatives Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar voiced concerns over Naqvi’s conduct. They criticised him for failing to congratulate India on the victory and for taking the trophy away from the venue despite India’s win.
BCCI’s demand over trophy custody
BCCI officials insisted that the Asia Cup trophy be kept at the ACC headquarters in Dubai from where the Indian board could collect it. Sources said Naqvi offered no concrete solution during the meeting and remained largely unresponsive to the concerns.
Threat to escalate matter to ICC
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that India had made a conscious decision not to accept the trophy directly from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s cricket board chairman and the country’s Interior Minister.
“This does not give him the right to take the trophy and medals with him. It is extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike,” Saikia said, adding that the board expected the trophy and medals to be returned promptly. He further warned that India would raise a formal protest on the issue at the International Cricket Council (ICC) conference scheduled in Dubai this November.
