India’s Blind Women Cricketers Create History

India wins the inaugural T20 Blind World Cup

Colombo: India’s women blind cricket team has achieved a historic milestone by winning the first-ever T20 Blind World Cup. In the final held at the P. Sara Oval Stadium in Colombo, India defeated Nepal by seven wickets.

Back in 2007, under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India had captured the first-ever Men’s T20 World Cup title. On the same lines, India’s women cricketers created another golden chapter on Sunday by clinching the maiden Blind T20 World Cup. After the main women’s national team secured their first ODI World Cup title on November 2 in Navi Mumbai under Harmanpreet Kaur, this triumph has brought another proud moment for the country in blind cricket as well.

India opted to field first after winning the toss and restricted Nepal to 114/5. Chasing the target, India overhauled the score in just 12 overs, finishing at 117/3 to seal a commanding and historic victory.

For India, batter Phula Saren starred with an unbeaten 44 — the highest score for the team — earning her the Player of the Final award. In the semi-finals, India had defeated Australia, while Nepal overcame Pakistan. Hosts Sri Lanka managed to win only one match, with their lone victory coming against the USA.

Blind cricket matches feature both fully blind players and those with partial vision impairment participating together for their teams.
