Dubai: India’s young opening stars Abhishek Sharma and Smriti Mandhana have both been named ICC Players of the Month for September in their respective categories.
Both Indian cricketers outperformed all others during the month Abhishek starred in the Asia Cup, while Mandhana dominated in the Women’s ODI series against world No. 1 Australia. It’s a rare occasion where both a male and female Indian player have won ICC awards in the same month.
Abhishek’s performance
The 25-year-old Abhishek scored 314 runs in seven matches at the Asia Cup the highest in the tournament averaging 44.85 with a stunning strike rate of 200.00.

He was also named Player of the Tournament and currently ranks world No. 1 in T20 Internationals with the highest ICC rating among batters. Apart from Abhishek, Kuldeep Yadav and Zimbabwe’s Brian Bennett were also contenders for the ICC award.
Mandhana’s dominance
The 29-year-old Smriti Mandhana, the world No. 1 batter in women’s ODIs, was also outstanding in September. She scored 308 runs in four ODIs at an average of 77.00, including a century off just 50 balls against Australia a new Indian record. Her competitors for the ICC award were Sidra Ameen of Pakistan and Tazmin Brits of South Africa, but Mandhana outshone them all.
Abhishek’s reaction
Expressing joy after receiving the award, Abhishek said:

Mandhana’s reaction
Mandhana, who scored 308 runs in September, said:
“This recognition from ICC is always a source of motivation for me. Every time I step onto the field, my goal is to perform my best and help my team win matches.”
