Harry Brook Faces Two-Year IPL Ban After Withdrawing from 2025 Season

England star batsman Harry Brook has been handed a two-year ban from the IPL after pulling out of the 2025 season at the last minute. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially notified both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Brook of its decision, enforcing its policy designed to deter sudden withdrawals by foreign players.
Brook, who was signed by the Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore during the IPL 2025 auction, opted out of the season to focus on international cricket. This marks the second consecutive year Brook has missed the tournament, having withdrawn from IPL 2024 following his grandmother’s passing. The BCCI has faced mounting pressure from franchises and stakeholders to implement stricter rules against players who back out after registering for the auction.
According to the new IPL rule, any player who enters the auction and then opts out before the season starts will be banned from both that season and future auctions for two years. A BCCI official explained, “An official communication has been sent to both the ECB and Brook, stating that he is banned for two years as per our policy, which every player was informed about before the auction. It’s a rule that must be followed.”
The policy aims to ensure player commitment and safeguard the investments of franchises that sign overseas talent. In recent years, several international players have withdrawn after signing lucrative contracts, causing challenges for the teams. Brook announced his decision via a social media post, stating:
He added, “I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive.”
With this decision, Brook’s absence from the IPL will extend through the next two seasons, as per the established policy.
