New Delhi: After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma had taken over as India’s Test captain, and now that both these legends have retired from the format, young Shubman Gill has been entrusted with the Test captaincy — and, in their very presence, also handed the reins of the ODI team. This marks a significant rise in Gill’s stature within the squad. Naturally, fans were eager to see how Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would greet him when they met for the first time after his appointment.
Under Gill’s leadership, the Indian ODI team is set to tour Australia, and the BCCI shared a video capturing his first meeting with Rohit and Virat before departure a truly memorable moment. The photos from this historic encounter have also gone viral.
Gill had earlier captained India in the Test series against England, which ended 2–2. But on Tuesday, he achieved his first major milestone as skipper when India lifted a Test trophy for the first time under his leadership, following a 2–0 whitewash of the West Indies. Now, as he embarks on his first ODI series as captain, Gill will be leading a side that includes the veteran duo Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on the Australian tour.
The three-match India–Australia ODI series begins on October 19. The first batch of the Indian squad departed from Delhi on Tuesday. Before departure, Gill met Rohit Sharma for the first time since taking over the ODI captaincy. Rohit warmly hugged him despite being busy with preparations, and the two shared smiles and laughter.

Later, when Gill boarded the team bus, he met Virat Kohli, who greeted him affectionately, congratulated him, and patted him on the back in encouragement.
Rohit and Virat last played together for India in the Champions Trophy in March 2025, where India emerged champions under Rohit’s captaincy.
