What lies next for Jadeja?

India’s foremost red ball all rounder Ravindra Jadeja in a notable absentee in the recent IND vs AFG once match series, which India won by a whopping innings and 300 runs. Jadeja, 37, has been without his partner R Ashwin since the latters retirement in the last BGT. Post that, Jadeja, while flourishing with the bat, has been on a lean run when it comes to his bowling.

(Old) New beginnings in the IPL

Ravindra Jadeja was part of the blockbuster IPL trade where he was traded in exchange of Sanju Samson to Rajasthan Royals, from Chennai Super Kings, where he was an integral part since 2012. He has won 3 titles with them, most notably the latest one in 2023, where he hit 10 off 2 to take the men in yellow to their 5th IPL trophy. Back in Pink, Jadeja had a decent season with both bat and ball, but not many impactful performances, and was in and out of the team owing to a tennis elbow in the latter stage of the tournament.

Tennis elbow at 37?

While Jadeja is a supremely fit athlete, an elbow injury at this stage of his career might expedite his twilight years. While the injury is in his non-bowling arm, the right arm is still required for batting, especially more in tests where playing with a soft arm is a necessity.

Spectacular debut for Suthar

Manav Suthar, 23, a left arm orthodox spinner from Rajasthan has mightily impressed everyone with his control and spin, something which Jadeja is known for. Suthar extracted as much as 5° of turn at 90kmph, with impressive drift and an arm ball we well I’m his repertoire. While it is too early to call time on Jadeja’s career with just one match, many have already made Suthar the successor to Jadeja. India has missed the spin duo of Ash – Jaddu, with many new spinners like Suthar, Harsh Dubey, Shivang, etc making their presence felt in domestic, one can hope for the return of the spin dominance that India is knows for.
