Gautam Gambhir Reveals Secret Behind India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Success

Ahmedabad: India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed that a strong team-first mindset was the foundation of the country’s successful campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking after India’s title-winning run, Gambhir emphasised that the team deliberately shifted its focus away from individual achievements and instead prioritised collective success. According to the ICC, the coach made it clear early in his tenure that personal milestones would not define a player’s value to the team.
India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to secure the trophy and make history by winning the tournament for the third time.
Gambhir explained that the squad’s mentality was centred on celebrating trophies rather than individual records. He said that discussions about personal landmarks had often dominated conversations in Indian cricket in the past, but under the current approach, the emphasis has shifted to achieving team goals.
The coach pointed to wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson as an example of this mindset. Samson played a crucial role during the tournament and delivered important performances in key matches. Gambhir noted that players like Samson showed the importance of playing for the team’s overall result instead of chasing personal milestones.
Gambhir also praised captain Suryakumar Yadav for his leadership during the tournament. According to the coach, Yadav’s approach made his role easier, describing him as a strong figure in the dressing room who led the team effectively.
India’s dominant campaign culminated in a historic victory, making them the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup and the first host nation to lift the trophy on home soil.
The coach believes that maintaining a culture built on trust, belief, and collective effort will remain central to India’s future success in international cricket.
