Due to scheduling issues, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s much-anticipated trip to Assam next month has been cancelled.
Her travel to New Delhi will now coincide with the yearly India-Japan summit.
In addition to the schedule issues, a delegation of prominent Japanese businesspeople are anticipated to accompany Takaichi, underscoring the logistical difficulties of hosting them all in Assam. The Japanese prime minister is expected to make her first trip to India between July 1 and July 3.
Although Guwahati was seen as a “possible venue” and “offered to the Japanese side,” according to people with the inside information, Takaichi’s busy schedule during the visit makes the trip to the Northeastern state unfeasible.
The timeframe between Prime Minister Takaichi’s planned arrival in India and her departure is relatively narrow due to her domestic obligations, which include an ongoing session of the Diet (Japanese Parliament). According to one of the individuals, “the visit is now likely to be held in Delhi in light of this and the additional logistical issues connected to a visit outside the capital.”
Last week, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, alluded to the possibility of the Japanese prime minister visiting the state. The planned visit had also been covered by Japanese media outlets. This is unlikely to happen, though.
