Arshdeep Singh Penalised After On-Field Incident With Daryl Mitchell

India pacer Arshdeep Singh has been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an on-field incident involving New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell during the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
According to a report , the left-arm fast bowler was fined 15 percent of his match fee and received one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct. The sanction was imposed after Arshdeep threw the ball in the direction of Mitchell during the high-profile match.
The incident occurred during the 11th over of New Zealand’s chase in the final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After fielding the ball in his follow-through, Arshdeep threw it back toward the pitch, but the throw struck Mitchell on the pads. The action led to a brief tense moment between the two players before match officials intervened.
Under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players can be penalised for throwing a ball or any item of cricket equipment at or near another player in a manner considered inappropriate or dangerous. The offence is classified as a Level 1 breach, which carries penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of the player’s match fee along with demerit points.
Reports noted that Arshdeep later accepted the sanction, meaning a formal disciplinary hearing was not required. He also apologised to Mitchell after the incident, helping defuse the situation between the two players.

Despite the momentary controversy, the match itself ended in a historic victory for India. The hosts delivered a dominant performance, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs to claim the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. With the win, India became the first men’s team to secure the T20 World Cup three times and successfully defend the championship.
India had posted a formidable total of 255 runs for five wickets in their 20 overs before restricting New Zealand to 159 runs in reply. The commanding result sealed another milestone in India’s T20 cricket history, even as the disciplinary action against Arshdeep became one of the notable talking points from the final.
The ICC’s decision highlights the governing body’s continued emphasis on maintaining discipline and sportsmanship during international matches, particularly in high-stakes tournaments like the T20 World Cup.
