‘I Can Forgive, But I Never Forget’: Smriti Mandhana’s Pain Comes Through As She Says, ‘Don’t Treat Me Like A Victim’

MUMBAI: Smriti Mandhana has already started being regarded as a batting legend in women’s cricket. She recently created world records for scoring the most runs in international cricket (10,891) as well as the most international centuries (18), and is being recognised as the leading batter in women’s cricket. Amid all this, she gave a mature and precise response when asked about her personal life in a recent interview.

Smriti Mandhana, who has the ability to tear apart the bowling of even the biggest names in women’s cricket, was preparing to play Sunday’s T20 Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka in Dubai when the interview went viral just hours before the match. Smriti always appears calm on the field, but in a podcast interview she offered a glimpse of the pain and anger that she keeps hidden in her heart.

A few months ago, Smriti was reportedly set to marry singer Palash Muchhal, but the wedding was called off just days before it was scheduled to take place for a much-discussed reason, and the two subsequently broke up. Smriti has not said anything about it in the past 10 months, and even in this podcast interview, she appeared to maintain a strong wall between her personal and professional life. She made only a brief and indirect comment about her personal life and kept the focus firmly on her performance on the field.

When Smriti was asked whether she easily forgives people, she gave a powerful reply: “I can forgive, but I never forget.” The meaning was clear: she believes in moving forward in life without getting into arguments with anyone, but she never forgets what someone has done to her.

During the interview, Smriti laughed as she said that people may consider her calm and simple-natured from the outside, but there is a lot of anger inside her. However, she does not believe in taking revenge against anyone in her personal life. She also does not expect sympathy from anyone and does not want anyone to portray her as a victim.
