The match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) was a seesaw battle in the first half, but Shreyas Iyer’s magnificent, clutch performance with the bat effortlessly sealed the game. This was a crucial must-win contest for Punjab; they needed a victory to stay alive in the complex race for the IPL 2026 playoffs—a result that also directly impacted the fate of Delhi Capitals. Iyer’s roaring, unbeaten 101 runs at the Ekana Stadium provided a spectacular finish to Punjab’s league stage campaign, snapping their disastrous six-match losing streak. The team has fought its way back into contention and now hopes for Mumbai Indians (MI) to defeat Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) to beat or at least stop Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the asking margin to secure their playoff berth.
LSG’s batting display in the first innings was commendable early on, but Punjab’s bowlers tightly squeezed the runs in the middle overs to restrict them from crossing the 200-man mark. Setting a challenging target of 197 on a typically slow Lucknow pitch, LSG still seemed to have a highly competitive total against Punjab’s ferocious batting lineup.

Punjab’s chase got off to a rocky start with early wickets, but what followed was a monumental 140-run partnership between skipper Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh that completely seized control of the game. Iyer finished the match in style, launching a towering six to simultaneously secure the victory and complete his maiden IPL century. With this feat, Shreyas Iyer has become only the fourth captain in IPL history to score a century while chasing after Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Sanju Samson, and the third captain in franchise history to score a ton.
This historic innings not only halted Punjab’s losing streak but also marked a grand individual comeback for the skipper. With their league games completed, it is now up to the results of other teams to decide whether Punjab will officially qualify for the playoffs.
