Maharashtra Hockey Player Helps India Win Asia Cup Trophy, Qualify For World Cup

Three lakh rupees awarded to each player of the victorious Indian team

Moky (China): Maharashtra hockey player Sanika Chandrakant Mane, who hails from Nool village in Gadhinglaj taluka of Kolhapur district, scored the decisive goal in the final of the Junior Asia Cup against China here on Sunday. Her 17th-minute strike helped the Indian team, led by captain Khaidem Chanu, eventually secure a 1-0 victory. With the win, India lifted the tournament trophy and also qualified for the Junior Hockey World Cup.

The decisive clash between the Indian and Chinese women’s teams witnessed an intense battle, but the goal scored by Sanika Mane (Sanika Mane) at the beginning of the second quarter proved to be a huge boost for India. Her strike eventually pushed China towards defeat. India entered the tournament as the defending champions and successfully retained the trophy with another title triumph.

China’s players dominated possession for much of the opening phase of the final and put the Indian team under some early mental pressure. However, India soon managed to come out of that pressure and, in the 17th minute, scored to put China under pressure instead. Sanika showed remarkable alertness when the opportunity came her way. With an intelligent movement, she went behind a Chinese defender, positioned herself perfectly and sent the ball into the goal from five metres out. Chinese goalkeeper Shu Mengjiao was left helpless as Sanika’s powerful strike found the back of the net.

A short while later, China got an opportunity to score through a penalty corner, but the goal was disallowed after the ball struck by one of their players entered the goalpost from an illegal height. Two minutes later, India got another chance to double the lead. However, Chinese goalkeeper denied captain Khaidem Chanu’s shot and kept the score at 1-0.

The Indian women’s team remained unbeaten throughout the Asia Cup. Hockey India has announced a prize of three lakh rupees for each member of the champion team, while every member of the support staff will receive a prize of Rs 1.5 lakh.
