During England’s eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the third and final Test at Edgbaston on Saturday, captain Joe Root broke the record set by great Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar for the most fifties in Test cricket. As England chased down the goal of 130 to seal a 3-0 series sweep, Root remained undefeated on 62 off 39 balls, striking nine fours.
Root has now surpassed Tendulkar’s 68 50s with his undefeated half-century. With 66 fifties, Shivnarine Chanderpaul is ahead of Allan Border, Rahul Dravid (63 each), and Ricky Ponting (62).
At Edgbaston, Root also became the first hitter to reach 1,000 Test runs. After Lord’s, Manchester, and The Oval, this is the fourth location in England where he has scored 1,000 runs. Root has scored 1,050 at The Oval, 1,128 at Manchester, and 2,203 at Lord’s. After former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis and legendary Australian Ricky Ponting, he is now among the select few to reach the 1,000-run milestone at four different locations.
